Star CBM: New assessments provide in-depth insights
When you logged in to the Renaissance Growth Platform this September, you may have noticed that a new assessment has been added to the Star assessment suite: Star CBM. Star 360 or Star Elementary subscribers have access to the Star CBM assessments at no additional cost. You can check if Star CBM is currently available to your students by logging in to your Renaissance Growth Platform site and looking for the Star CBM Reading and Math tiles. (If you have one of these two subscriptions, but don’t see the Star CBM tiles, you may need to contact your administrator to assign Star CBM to your classrooms.)
Why did Renaissance add curriculum-based measures (CBM) to our world-class Star computer-adaptive assessments? We listened to customer requests! You told us that you commonly use more than one type of assessment to understand student achievement and growth. Star CBM complements Star adaptive assessments with direct, one-on-one measures of the essential foundations of student development in reading and math.
Star CBM Reading (grades K–6) and Star CBM Math (grades K–3) allow you to observe and assess students’ development so you can better target instruction and intervention to each learner’s specific needs. Using the same platform, Star CBM Reading also includes Rapid Automatic Naming measures to additionally screen for characteristics of dyslexia, a requirement in many states.
You’ll see the recommended one-minute screening measure for each student indicated in Star CBM, which can be administered however it’s most convenient to you and your students—whether online, in print, remote, or in person.
After screening, review immediate results in the Star Record Book (as shown below) to compare CBM and computer-adaptive measures side-by-side and see recommendations for next steps— Monitor Progress, Add a Goal, and Track a Goal.
Star CBM Math and Star CBM Reading are already a popular option for teachers and students; over 100,000 assessments were given within the first month of release.
